What is the difference between Mid Drive and Hub Drive?

Category: General Questions

The primary difference between a mid-drive and hub-drive motor on an eBike lies in their placement and functionality:

  1. Mid-drive motor:
    • Location: Positioned near the pedals, typically at the bike’s bottom bracket.
    • Functionality: Powers the cranks directly, transferring force through the bike’s drivetrain.
    • Benefits: Provides a more balanced weight distribution, resulting in improved handling and stability. Offers better efficiency, especially on varied terrain or steep hills. Allows for a wider range of gearing options, enhancing the rider’s ability to adapt to different riding conditions.
  2. Hub-drive motor:
    • Location: Integrated within the rear or front wheel hub.
    • Functionality: Directly drives the motion of the wheel itself.
    • Benefits: Simplifies the bike’s design and maintenance, as it doesn’t affect the drivetrain. Typically offers a throttle and pedal-assist modes for varying levels of assistance. Suitable for casual riders or those seeking straightforward operation without the need for frequent gear changes or adjustments.

In summary, while both types of motors offer their own advantages, the choice between a mid-drive and hub-drive motor often depends on factors such as riding style, terrain, and personal preferences.

Where are MeloYelo bikes made?

Category: General Questions

The question “Where are your ebikes made?” is a common one, but it is also an inaccurate one. Why? Because bikes and ebikes are assembled using components from a wide variety of different suppliers, some of whom may be based in Japan, some in Korea, and some in China for example. So, the factory “making” MeloYelo ebikes is actually an assembly plant, not a manufacturing plant. Therefore, we believe a better question is “How are MeloYelo ebikes made?”

How far can you ride on a charge?

Category: General Questions

This is a little bit like asking ‘how long is a piece of string’. How far you can ride on a single eBike charge depends on several factors e.g. battery wattage, terrain, level of assist and how hard you pedal.

Generally, your eBike will go approx. 50-70km on one battery charge. For more information and how to work out how far your eBike will go, click the link below.

What’s the difference between watts and torque?

Category: General Questions

Wattage represents the amount of electrical energy that the motor can convert into mechanical power and torque is the rotational force that drives an engine or motor.

So in eBikes, Torque represents the turning force that propels your eBike forward, while watts i.e. power determine how quickly that force is delivered.
