Moustache or MeloYelo: Which ebike should I buy?

A recent survey of ebike owners conducted by Consumer NZ found that of those participants who were over 60 years old, the most commonly owned brands were:

  • Moustache
  • Trek
  • Giant/Liv
  • Specialized
  • MeloYelo

In this article, we’re going to take a look particularly at Moustache and MeloYelo. Both Moustache and MeloYelo offer several different models with step-through frames, which make it easy to get on and off the bike.

Origin

Moustache bikes are designed and built in France. MeloYelo bikes are designed in New Zealand, name-brand componentry is selected from best-of-breed suppliers (Shimano, Bafang, Tektro, LG & Samsung) and the bikes are assembled in China under the watchful eye of MeloYelo’s independent quality control team.

Motor

Moustache uses the Bosch Performance Line motors, which are highly regarded for efficiency and quietness, though one drawback to consider is that these motors cannot be operated via a thumb throttle.

MeloYelo use Bafang motors, which are renowned both for their reliability and high torque. And a thumb throttle is standard on all MeloYelo ebikes. The throttle helps get you moving from a standstill, and can also deliver an extra boost of power as needed while climbing hills.

Battery

Moustache uses Bosch batteries, typically in the range of 500 – 625 watt-hours. MeloYelo uses either LG or Samsung batteries, typically in the range of 630-720 watt-hours.

Frame

Both Moustache and MeloYelo use 6061 aluminium alloy for their frames.

Customer feedback

Moustache enjoys consistently strong customer feedback about quality, reliability, and after-sales service.

NZ-based surveys and customer reviews highlight MeloYelo’s sturdy construction, long-lasting performance and high reliability. The bikes are described as hardy and durable, with ready access to parts and responsive local support.

Warranty

Moustache offers a 2-year warranty. MeloYelo offers a 3-year/3000km warranty, provided their service schedule is adhered to.

Price range

Moustache bikes are typically in the $6K+ range, while MeloYelo bikes range from $3500 – $6500.

Which should you choose: MeloYelo or Moustache?

Moustache offers:

  • European premium styling and build

  • Established brand presence and a wide range of models

MeloYelo offers:

  • A range of trail-ready ebikes, fully equipped with mudguards, lights, and a carrier

  • Great value for money

Neither brand is strictly better, and our advice is to test-ride several different brands and models of ebikes before you choose the one that best suits you.
