We are most fortunate in New Zealand to have vast areas of wilderness, stunning scenery, and an ever-growing number of trails that cater to cyclists and electric bike riders.

At MeloYelo, we asked our customers, most of whom are senior riders, to tell us what they considered the best bike trails for seniors in New Zealand. Knowing that many e-bike owners had not ridden a bike in years before buying their electric bike, we were particularly interested in easy ebike trails, as well as scenic e-bike friendly pathways suitable for seniors.

Top E-Bike Trails in the North Island of NZ

Hauraki Rail Trail:

The Hauraki Rail Trail is a 197-kilometre trail that runs from Kaiaua to Thames, following the route of the old railway line that served the Hauraki region. The trail takes riders through some of New Zealand’s most beautiful countryside, with stunning views of the Coromandel Peninsula and the Firth of Thames. The trail is mostly flat, making it a great option for riders looking for easy electric bike trails. Our MeloYelo customers said they particularly loved biking along the Karangahake Gorge. They could see remnants of old mining operations, ride across steel-girded bridges, and bike through a giant tunnel. The best time of the year to ride the Hauraki Rail Trail is March into May. These days are not as hot, there are fewer people, and the autumn leaves are a treat to behold.

Tongariro River Trail Turangi:

The Tongariro River Trail is a 15-kilometre trail along the Tongariro River in the central North Island. The trail is relatively flat, making it an excellent option for e-bike riders of all abilities. Along the way, riders will be treated to stunning views of the Tongariro National Park, including Mt. Ruapehu and Mt. Ngauruhoe. The trail is also home to some of the best trout fishing in New Zealand. It can be an excellent option for riders who want to combine cycling with fishing.

If you have flexibility, avoid January. You’ll encounter many kids on school holidays and international anglers hoping to land their dream trout. For a unique experience, why not consider staying at a local fishing lodge while down, such as Tongariro Lodge or Creel Lodge? If you only have a little time, treat yourself to a coffee and a cake from the coffee cart next to the main highway bridge.

Waikato River Trail:

The Waikato River Trail is a 105 km trail that follows the path of the Waikato River from Lake Karapiro to Atiamuri. Ride five trail sections that follow New Zealand’s longest river through native bush, exotic forest, remote farmland, boardwalks, streams, suspension bridges, and magnificent hydropower dams. These trails offer a variety of scenery for e-bike riders.

Timber Trail:

The Timber Trail is an 85 km trail that takes beautiful scenery through the Pureora Forest Park, west of Taupo. The first day has some moderately challenging uphill sections, but after some R&R and a fun evening at the lodge, you will easily tackle day 2, most of which is downhill. The track is steeped in history around the early days of forestry in the region. One of the highlights is the magnificent swingbridge.

Top E-Bike Trails in the South Island of NZ

Otago Central Rail Trail:

The Otago Central Rail Trail is one of New Zealand’s most famous cycle trails, and for good reason. This 150-kilometre trail takes riders through the heart of Otago, a region known for its stunning landscapes and rich history. The trail follows the route of the old Otago Central Railway, which was in operation from 1891 to 1990. Today, the trail is one of the best and most popular trails for senior ebike riders in NZ. E-bike adventures along the Otago Central Rail Trail are ideal for multi-day adventures with many accommodations and dining options.

Lake Dunstan:

Lake Dunstan is a beautiful artificial lake in the heart of the Otago region. The lake is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, and several cycle trails run along its shore. One of the best options for e-bike riders is the Lake Dunstan Trail. It is a 45-kilometre trail that takes riders from Cromwell to Clyde. The trail is an excellent option for riders looking for an easy ride with beautiful scenery and resting places. Consider stopping at Carrick Winery for lunch; the setting and the views are spectacular.

Great Taste Trail:

The Great Taste Trail is a 175-kilometre cycle trail that runs through the Nelson-Tasman region of New Zealand. The trail takes riders through vineyards, orchards, and along the coast, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The Great Taste Trail is a great option for senior e-bike riders, with plenty of accommodation and dining options.

Queenstown Trails:

The Queenstown Trail is one of the more lengthy New Zealand e-bike trails at 120km – you will be on cross-country trails, quiet roads & the shores of Lake Wakatipu, and around the Queenstown Lake District.

Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail:

The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is a 301 km trail that takes in stunning scenery from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean—from Aoraki/Mt Cook or Tekapo to Oamaru. The trail is broken into nine sections. For a deep experience and a huge sense of accomplishment, ride the full length over five to seven days, or pick one or two sections and ride them as day trips from local towns. The variety of terrain means there is a mix of easy to intermediate trail riding.

Conclusion

Whether you’re a Kiwi getting back into biking or a tourist wanting a unique adventure in New Zealand, there is a trail for everyone. This article has highlighted some of the best ebike trails for seniors, as well as easy ebike trails in NZ, as selected by MeloYelo electric bike riders, most of whom are seniors themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my own ebike to ride these trails?

In most cases, no. There are local outfitters who will rent an ebike to you and provide shuttle services, accommodation booking services, etc.

How can I ship my ebike between the North and South Islands?

The only option is via the Cook Strait ferries. Air New Zealand will not accept ebike batteries as cargo.
