We all know that the road can be a dangerous place – even moreso for cyclists who are sharing the same road with cars. Electric bike riders have the advantage sometimes over push bike riders, in that they can tap into the extra power available from the electric motor to dodge a hazardous situation. However they will also sometimes be at a disadvantage, for instance when traveling at speed when a driver in a parked vehicle ahead suddenly opens their door, unaware of the cyclist’s rapid approach.

Below we share our top safety tips for riding your ebike this summer.

Being visible is key.

For ebikers who sharing the road with cars, doing everything they can to maximise visibility is a top priority. So what can you do to increase your visibility?

  • Dress in high visibility clothing. Brightly coloured clothing or reflective gear increases your visibility, especially in low-light conditions. The same applies to your helmet. Don’t be the staid old kiwi who buys a black or silver helmet, get one that is fluorescent yellow, green or orange, at least for riding around town.
  • Make sure that your bike has lights, and ride with your lights on.
  • Consider a brightly coloured bike. MeloYelo offers its ebikes in a range of bright colours, for this very reason.

Always wear a helmet.

In New Zealand, you are required by law to wear a helmet. A helmet offers protection against serious head injuries but also – as mentioned above – can increase your visibility if it is brightly coloured. Gloves are also a great idea – they can help protect your hands from scrapes and injuries.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Watch out for cars and pedestrians: Be mindful of other road users and give them plenty of space. Use a mirror to stay aware of what’s behind you. Maintain a defensive riding mindset by anticipating potential hazards and staying alert to your surroundings. Be mindful of road conditions, parked vehicles, opening car doors, and pedestrian crossings. Always be on the lookout for blind spots.

Obey traffic rules and signals.

Respecting traffic rules and signals is imperative for the safety of e-bike riders. Adhere to speed limits, use hand signals when making turns, and always yield to pedestrians and other vehicles. Practicing defensive and mindful riding habits enhances safety for both the rider and those sharing the road.

Communicate your intentions.

Use hand signals and make eye contact with other road users to minimise misinterpretations.

Avoid distractions.

In particular, avoid using your phone or other distractions while riding.

Regularly inspect your ebike.

Maintaining your ebike in optimal condition is a key component of ensuring safety. Conduct routine inspections of the brakes, tyres, lights, and electrical components to mitigate the risk of mechanical failures. A well-maintained ebike significantly reduces the likelihood of accidents caused by preventable malfunctions.

Prioritise safe speed and acceleration.

The acceleration capabilities of ebikes can be exhilarating, but it’s crucial to prioritise safe speed and acceleration, especially in crowded or unfamiliar areas. Familiarise yourself with the speed settings of your ebike and adjust them according to the specific riding conditions to maintain control and prevent accidents.

Conclusion: Embrace safe and responsible ebiking

As ebikes continue to revolutionise the way we navigate our urban landscapes, prioritising safety is paramount for riders of all levels. By incorporating these essential electric bike safety tips into your riding routine, you can embark on your ebike journeys with confidence, knowing that you are equipped to navigate the roads safely and responsibly.
