Lightweight electric bikes for seniors: What are the best options?

Are you searching for a lightweight ebike in New Zealand?

Most people would assume that in order to be lightweight, an ebike would need to have a carbon fibre frame. And indeed, there are ebikes available in NZ with carbon fibre frames, such as those from Hybrid EBikes.

However, at MeloYelo ebikes we decided to explore the possibility of creating an ebike that was as light as a carbon fibre bike, but with a frame built from aircraft-grade aluminium. We chose this approach for two reasons:

  1. We believed it would be possible
  2. All of our previous bike models had aluminium frames, and we knew and trusted the supplier

Our design team rose to the challenge

While our aluminium frame would be heavier than a carbon fibre frame, we believed that if we carefully considered the weight of every single component on our lightweight ebike, that the total weight of the bike could come in close to the 22kg weight of carbon fibre models available in NZ.

Components where we were able to reduce the weight included:

  • The motor
  • The handlebars
  • The gears
  • The wheels, spokes and hubs
  • The front forks (suspension)
  • The saddle
  • The lights and carrier
  • The chain

Meet the Superlite: A lightweight electric bike with a step-through frame

At approximately 22kg (varies slightly depending on frame size), the MeloYelo Superlite electric bike is significantly lighter than most other ebikes, and is 4 kilograms lighter than MeloYelo’s other bike models. Importantly, the Superlite is also as light as other ebikes made from carbon fibre.

What are the advantages of the Superlite?

Firstly, its light weight means that it is easier to load and unload on bike racks, for example on the back of your car, motorhome or caravan where it is usually necessary to lift your ebike.

Secondly, the air suspension gives a smoother ride compared to bikes fitted with normal coil suspension. And comfort is a top priority for many older riders.

Thirdly, it is easier to pedal and requires less effort to maintain a certain speed as compared to those riding heavier ebikes. (When I first test-rode the Superlite, I was riding with a group of other ebike riders who had heavier bikes, and I kept getting ahead of them, even though I didn’t appear to be putting in any greater effort. To validate this, on the return journey I swapped bikes with one of the other guys in our group, and lo and behold, he got the same result.)

Take a look at this video of Gail. Gail wanted a bike that she could ride to work, but which would be equally at home on South Island trails. Gail chose the Superlite.

As Gail says herself, “This bike just makes me smile!” as she takes on trails such as Lake Dunstan and Lake Hawea.

Conclusion

The Superlite ticks a lot of boxes, especially for older ebike riders:

  • Step-through frame for easy on and off
  • As light as carbon fibre, yet robust thanks to its aircraft-grade aluminium
  • High torque Bafang M420 motor
  • 10 speed Shimano Deore gear set, matched with five different levels of battery assistance, allowing you to tackle hills with ease
  • Light-yet-strong air shocks that glide over bumps for superior riding comfort
  • Tektro hydraulic brakes with 180mm rotors, for excellent stopping power
  • Maxxis Ikon puncture-resistant tyres
  • A thumb throttle that can deliver extra motor assistance when you’re climbing steep hills
  • Trail-style mudguards, plus carrier and lights, meaning you’re ready to tackle the great trails of NZ, at no extra charge for these extras
  • Industry-leading 3-year warranty

If you’re looking for an ebike to carry on the back of your motor home or caravan – one that is as light as possible to load and unload on your bike carrier – then the Superlite ebike for trails may be the best choice for you. Why not book a test ride with your nearest MeloYelo agent and find out if the Superlite is the best ebike for you.
