The best off-road e-bike in New Zealand – for you – is the one that:

  • Is fit for your purposes
  • Is comfortable for you
  • Is within your budget

Fit for your Purposes

Do you intend to tackle light to moderately challenging trails? Or do you see yourself being adventurous and taking on more challenging off-road trails? For those of you who will be riding easier trails, a bike in the $3000 – $4000 range, such as the MeloYelo Town’nTrail ($3495), will most likely meet your needs. For those of you who will be tackling steeper trails and rougher, back-country terrain, you will want a mid-drive motor with adequate torque, a larger battery (630 watt-hours+), appropriate gearing, and strong, reliable brakes. Depending on your age and mobility, you might also want a step-through frame to make it easier to mount and dismount your bike, and perhaps even a thumb throttle that helps get you moving from a standstill, and can also give you extra motor assistance while climbing a steep hill. In the MeloYelo range, models that fit the bill include the Ascent 3 ($4595), the SuperLite 3 ($5495), and the SuperTrail ($6495).

Comfortable for you

A variety of factors contribute to bike comfort:

  • How well the bike has been fitted to you: Saddle type, saddle height, handlebar type (there are several options), handlebar height and position; position of the various controls (brake levers, gear shifter, throttle, etc. on the handlebars. You should ensure that all of these have been adjusted to your liking before accepting delivery of your bike.
  • Quality of suspension. If comfort is highly important to you, then you may want to consider a full-suspension bike (suspension both front and rear). The MeloYelo SuperTrail, at $6495, is an example. Another option is to add a Suntour NCX suspension seat post under your saddle. The softness (or hardness) can be adjusted to what feels best for you. These typically cost around $250.
  • Dropper seat post. These come with a lever on the handlebars to raise or lower your saddle. So, for example, if you’re coming to a stop and want to be able to put your feet flat on the ground, then a flick of the lever will drop your seatpost to enable that.

Is within your budget

You can pay $20,000 for an ebike, and if your budget allows, by all means, go for it. On the other hand, for $6500 or less, you can get a very reliable ebike that will tackle any trails you care to ride.

Why are more and more people choosing ebikes for riding trails in NZ?

There are a few reasons:

  • Riding an ebike is lots of fun. Without fail, those who ride an ebike for the first time get a huge smile and can’t believe it has taken them so long to discover the joys of ebiking.
  • Ebikes enable Kiwis to see parts of NZ that they would not otherwise get to see;
  • Ebikes have been proven beneficial for both physical and mental health.
  • Ebike owners find that they quickly make new friends. There are ebike riding groups in most cities and towns around NZ, and you never know who you’ll meet out there on the trails.

Here are some comments from ebike owners, which we hope will inspire you to embark on your ebike adventures:

“We take ours on all our campervan holidays now… never a problem wondering if a certain track is ‘too long’ or ‘too steep’, even in our seventies!” – Ruth

“It’s been great to get out and enjoy the numerous bike trails in our area and surrounds. Great for my fitness and general wellbeing.” – Lawrence

“Instead of finding routes with as few hills as possible, I now ride where I want knowing I can handle the hills on my ebike.” – Barbara

“My old bike sat in the garage and was hardly ever ridden. I’ve ridden over 3,700kms in two years of owning my MeloYelo.. kind of says it all, really!” – Pauline

“Love my ebike, joined biking groups and it gives you the freedom to view nature, have great company, keeps you really fit and all this keeps you younger!” – Angela

FAQs

What are the best off-road electric bikes available in New Zealand in 2025?

The best electric bike for you is:

  • The one in which you feel most comfortable.
  • The one that best meets your needs.
  • The one that fits within your budget.

The way to identify the ebike that is best for you is to test-ride several different bikes. MeloYelo offers comprehensive test-rides, away from busy streets. You can book a MeloYelo test ride here.

How much do off-road electric bikes cost in NZ in 2025?

It is possible to buy an electric bike that is suitable for both around town and easy-to-moderate off-road trails for under $3500 (check out the MeloYelo Town’nTrail). Or, for a bike that is suitable for more challenging trails, the MeloYelo Ascent, SuperLite, or SuperTrail models should be on your consideration list, especially since they are backed by NZ’s only 3-year warranty.

Which off-road e-bike brands are most popular in NZ for 2025?

In addition to the highly popular MeloYelo models, brands to consider include Giant, Trek, Sinch, and Specialized.

What features should I look for in an off-road electric bike for New Zealand terrain?

When choosing an off-road electric bike for New Zealand’s terrain, keep the following features in mind:

  • Battery size: You will want a battery of 630 watt-hours or larger to ensure that you can tackle longer rides without the fear of running out of power.
  • Torque: Torque is turning power. A motor with more torque (80Nm or greater) is capable of doing more of the grunt work for you on steeper hills.
  • Throttle: Some ebikes come with a thumb throttle; some do not. When you’re shopping for an ebike, be sure and try a bike with a throttle so that you can determine whether or not it will be beneficial for you. (All MeloYelo ebikes come with throttles. However, it is the rider’s choice as to whether the throttle is used.)

Conclusion

Ebiking is fun. It’s healthy, both mentally and physically. It’s social – a great way to meet new people and to spend time with family. And, it’s an activity that can be enjoyed even by those with mobility challenges that prevent them from engaging in other forms of sport or exercise.

Ebikes suitable for riding off-road trails start at around $3000, but can cost as much as $20,000. However, within the range of $3,500 – $7,000, there’s an ebike that will certainly meet your needs.

Before you buy, make sure you try several makes and models, talk to friends, and conduct your own online research. MeloYelo agents are located throughout NZ. They are knowledgeable, patient, and not pushy, and will most certainly offer comprehensive test-rides, great after-sales support, and NZ’s best ebike warranty.
